There has been a lot of talk lately about making goals for 2014. One look on Facebook and it’s there. If you look on Twitter, you will be inundated with people telling you the best way to keep your goals. It’s just that time of year when everyone and their brother seems to be making plans to be a better person and accomplish something new and exciting.
I’m no stranger to making goals. I go through the routine each and every year. As I began to think about my goals and aspirations for the year, I came to a grinding halt. I felt conflicted as to what goal should be my primary goal and which goals should take a backseat to the others. During my pondering, I turned to the Bible for direction. I read Luke 9:23-24, as Jesus was talking to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.” (NASB)
I realized it was okay to have goals and plans for the year, but I could not allow those goals and plans to become my idol. I had to give God my list and give Him permission to change those goals and plans during the year, or daily, if necessary. Goals are good for us, but they can never come before God and His desires for our lives.
Do you struggle with goals and plans becoming so important that they become a priority over God?
